Dear friends,

Tonight my brother's girlfriend took me to a psychic for my birthday as a 'rite of passage' sort of thing. Was surreal and uncomfortably accurate. The woman KNOWS. I'll probably be up all night thinking about it and its implications for Reason.

Has anyone read Diary of a Nobody? I should make a livejournal for Charles Pooter. But I think I would write more like Woodhouse than the Grossmith bros.

Liv once told me that i'm the most difficult person ever to get to know. this is true, but i've never felt it so acutely. you know when you know that someone has completely the wrong idea about you? and then your whole relationship with that aquaintence becomes based on their assumptions about your personality?

anyway. i'm finally leaving citr. Promotions Director position will be open to any and all in the elections at the end of this month.

this is a big step for me, kids. i was practically reared there. i was a fresh faced 16 year old, and i used to bus over there every friday as an escape from suburban hell. i used to catelogue everything i listened to and what i thought of it. everyone terrified me but nardwuar and chrisarrific. i met duncan, saelan, and wilson when i was 17.

sigh.

i thought at first i should start another show in the summer, but liv is probably right. maybe i should focus on something else. now i can finally write! yes, sweet, sweet writing.

however... i still want to do the indie pop collective. the point being, the more people involved, the less work for everybody, the better the quality and variety. the idea for this show has had many incarnations, first as a discorder show, then as a show focused on the Vancouver scene. i was thinking of having some of the show be interviews that anyone could pitch and produce (as a way to suck in volunteers) and on some days, bringing in local bands to co-host. ryan of they shoot horses wanted to co-host with me, but his tour schedule is incessant and is ongoing. if you're reading this and are suddenly inspired, let me know.

Subject:Valentines playlist of sorts (as posted on myspace
Time:10:13 am
For the past three years, I’ve done a Valentine’s special on CiTR. This year, showless but still desiring to contribute to tonight’s festivities, I have made a playlist that is in narrative style. I am writing this while eating breakfast and almost late for work, so forgive my disregard of grammatical rules.

PS: if you’re looking for something to do tonight and crowds aren’t appealing to you, come over to my house. I’m having a pot luck with a mock nihlist theme. Later, possibly, there will be the Big Lebowski. And you can try my famous pear cobbler.

So the first stage is your carefree, prowling bachelor mode. Its rockin:
The gestures – “run, run, run”
The rationals – “I need you”
The Blues Project – “No time like the right time”
The Chameleons – “Turn to the Vices”

For a slight detour I almost left out, there is the unrequited affection/attention state (the one that I seem continually stuck in). Try the entire Smiths catelogue, and the Modern Lovers – “I’m Straight” (“I called this number three times already today… I still don’t know if I should of called up. Look just tell me, why don’t you, if I’m out of place. Cause here’s your chance to make me feel awkward and wish that I had never even called up this place...” gold. Johnathan Richman is my ideal.)

Then, let’s say you find someone. In a debauched evening I’d recommend:
Pulp – “My legendary girlfriend”, “Pencil skirt”, “acrylic afternoons”
Depeche mode – “I feel you” or “in your room” or “Fly on the Windscreen” (very ‘to my coy mistress’)
Jon spenser blues explosion - “the world of sex”
Death From Above 1979 – “Sexy Results”

Then, the morning after and the first few weeks of your acquaintance:
Air – Talkie Walkie (my won't myspace let me italicize?) – the album one should listen to while in bed with a new and enchanting lover. The whole album is exactly the stage of the relationship where we’re not quite sure what happens after we get out of bed. It has just the right mix of blissful lust, wonder, and a queasy consciousness that it could be love or it could well be the fuck buddy you could not keep. Highlights: “Run” and “Biological”.

Continuing in the line of Air, I’ll add New Order – “586”, Dusty Springfield – “windmills of your mind”, and Ella Fitzgerald – “get thee behind me satan”

The stage of full blown infatuation, or, dare we say, love?:
The Temptations – “Get Ready”
Siouxie and the Banchees – “kiss them for me”
New order – “Perfect kiss”
Prince – “Raspberry Beret” or “I would die for you”
The Smiths – “I Won’t Share You”
The Velvet Underground – “I Found a Reason” or "Pale Blue Eyes"

And it begins to sour. In this state of insecurities, misgivings, and disenchantment:
Blond Redhead – Melody of Certain Damaged Lemons – Personally, the whole album speaks to the pattern of things which go wrong for me in relationships. For the purposes of our special theme, I’ll highlight “Hated Because of Certain Great Qualities”, “This is Not”, and when you’re completely disheartened, listen to “For the Damaged Mother”

Continuing along this line, try: Belle and Sebastian – “I’m Waking Up to Us” and The Buzzcocks – “ever fallen in love”

When you’re clinging to something that’s crumbing:
Belle and Sebastian – “Your Cover’s Blown”, Blond Redhead – “Doll is Mine”, and Magnetic Fields – “No one will ever love you”

The last Magnetic Fields song transitions well into the ‘I am bitter and slightly creepy in the aftermath”:
Deerhoof – “spy on you”
Fleetwood mac – “gold dust woman” (depending on how it ended)
Anna oxygen – “red horse café”
Magnetic Fields – “I don’t want to get over you”
Magnetic Fields – “how fucking romantic”
Lee Hazelwood and Nancy Sinatra – “flowers on the wall”

Enter true misery. There are two kinds, one that is directly correlated to your break up. I suggest these songs:
Morrissey – “Suedehead”
Fiest – “let it die”
Al green – “how do you mend a broken heart”
Broadcast – “tears inn the typing pool”
The Organ – “memorize the city”
Holly Golightly – “card table”
Leonard Cohen – “Suzanne”
Rufus Wainwright – “complaint de la butte”

The second kind of misery is like the core and final layer of hell. Pure loneliness and vacancy. I highly recommend that you come to my pot luck instead of listening to this playlist tonight:
Smiths – “last night I dreamt that somebody loved me”
The Greenhornes – “three faint calls”
Stones Roses – “I Wanna be Adored”
David Bowie – “Ashes to Ashes” (true, this has nothing to do with love. But I think the state of mind being described lends itself nicely to the one that will be enduced by copious amounts of alcohol while you lie on your bedroom floor with only your memories to keep you warm)
Johnny Cash and Nick Cave – “So Lonesome I could cry”
Ultravox and Midge Ure – “Fade to Grey”.

"Fade to Grey" is the last song because it signals the final embracing of nihlism and what you pretend is asexualism.

The following events were just relayed to me:

On the early morning of his 40th birthday, my roomate was asleep in his bed until he heard voices in his room. He took off his earplugs and looked around. It was still dark. The voice was coming from a Mighty Morphin' Power Ranger in his gym bag stuffed into a storage space. It said "Go For IT! It's Morphin' time!!!"

wow.

For some reason, The Greenhornes have been ignored to now, despite releasing the ever-golden "Dual Mono", an album that I've listened to more times than I can say, that "speaks my truth". And the first album was quite good as well. If you're a fan of Holly Golightly, get a hold of a copy of their version of "there's an end", which is on Dual Mono.

They are coming to town! Bryce says that when he saw them in Austin, they were boring and uninspired. Ah well.

Liv, doesn't the one on the far right look like Richard? sigh.

Ladytron is also coming to town. Has anyone ever seen them live? I wonder why no one really talked about Witching Hour when it came out. International Dateline, Soft Power, and Destroy Everything you Touch were some of my favourite songs that they've done, they were so dark and yet so like the Pet Shop Boys.

wait, i only check my livejournal once a week. and saelan always has things i steal. i almost forgot to steal from him this week. but:

Nick Cave... dark and creepy. You're a bi-polar genius, with equal passion for the most degrading aspects of humanity, as well as the beauty & wonder of God and Heaven.

This is the only thing i've ever posted at my myspace. it is a music quiz. it is long saelan and luke have them as well, if you're at liberty to peruse theirs and havent yet.

1. Of all the bands/artists in your cd/record collection, which one do you own the most albums by?
I would say I have more Smiths-related articles than Pulp, followed closely by Bowie. But actually, in my high school years i went classic-rock record crazy, and I'd buy mass amounts of records from flea markets for a dollar or under. So technically i think it's between the Stones (16 records) and the Kinks (14 records).

2. What was the last song you listened to?
"Corporeal" by Broadcast.

3. What's in your record/CD player right now?
CD player... I havent used my CD player in ages. My Itunes is currently on shuffle, and i believe We are Wolves are playing as I type. On my record player is "Blonde on Blonde".

4. What song pretty much sums you up?
hmm. I'd like to say any cover of "sea-line woman" (preferably nina simone's) or the saxaphone in !!!'s "Hello? Is this thing on?" or in any Roxy Music song. but i'm probably more along the lines of "i started something i couldn't finish" (smiths), or the outcasts' "self conscious over you". o wait, i am totally new order's "regret". i am anything by new order. or pulp, for that matter.

5. What's your favourite local band?
Chris-a-riffic solo fills me with love, but i know all the words to his band that is no more, Human Hi-lite Reel.

6. What was the last show you attended?
Terry Riley last friday.

7. What was the greatest show you've ever been to?
!!! a month ago was nothing short of orgasmic. Depeche Mode, a few months back was my most anticipated. Le Tigre two Novembers ago was also very good times. Broadcast was the most surreal.

8. What's the worst band you've ever seen in concert?
Ha, Bloc Party last summer. most bored-looking band ever.

9. What band do you like musically but dislike the members of?
I'll never forgive blur for the (slightly funny, mainly cruel) hooliganism they inflicted on poor nardwuar, and yet... i will dance if their songs come on.
I hear that Mark E. Smith (of the Fall) is a real jerk, and yet who did not laugh when they read that he called Tony Wilson "Maggie Thatcha's favourite baby, ya"

10. What is the most musically involved you have ever been?
hosting Unpack your Adjectives on CiTR. But I spent the most amount of time on the fill-ins i used to do on citr when i was 17, because i was so nervous and also anxious to avoid the wrath of fiery-haired bryce dunn, who i found terrifying until about 2 years ago.

11. What shows are you looking forward to?
Animal Collective is the only thing i bought tickets to so far, but i won't admit to myself how badly I wanted to go to Belle and Sebastian before it sold out. sigh. but anyway, stereolab is coming, and many other shows i can't afford.

12. What is your favorite band shirt?
my Hidden Cameras shirt that now has numerous purple-dye sporadic spots on it. how it happened i do not know.

13. What musicians would you like to hang out with for a day?
Jarvis. you knew the answer. but also, i would love to be with angie reed and anna oxygen and holly go-lightly. the four of us would have a magical day of female 'freshness'.

14. What musician would you like to be in love with for a day?
It doesn't take much to make me have a crush on you. I am ever enchanted by people on purely shallow, horrible, one-dimensional bases all the time. What does it take to be in my Tiger Beat/libidinous candy land? all it really takes is a good hair cut and some aesthetic sense. which are most musicians with PR or maybe a girlfriend. and anyone with dance moves. i must also confess my completely self-destructive weak spot for witty, narcisitic, slightly twisted lecherers: jarv, serge gainsbourg, bo diddley, lord byron, etc. and alex kapranos, who can raise one suggestive sexy eyebrow that will evapourate your panties.

15. Sabbath or solo Ozzy?
Sabbath. Not that i know an immense amount about this topic at all.

16. Commodores or solo Lionel Ritchie?
the Commodores, fucker. don't you pretend like you wouldn't get down to that. And Luke's right, Nichol Ritchie is adopted.

17. Punk rock, hip hop or heavy metal?
I like Luke's answer: "yes".

18. What was the greatest decade for music?
I'm all over the place. the decades i favour most are 1920-now. and i love the 80s, so go 'fuck a goat', as liv would say. new order and excess and new versus no wave and lots of colour and flash and awesome hip hop and slightly more interesting bubble gum. and the 90s trashing i have read thus far should relent to include some love for riot grrl and brit pop.

19. How many music-related videos/dvds do you own?
Hmm, this is rough as i have no tv. i have only three: the smiths complete picture, who put the M in manchester, and goldfrapp.

20. What is your favourite movie soundtrack?
Trainspotting is the soundtrack that has held a special place in my heart since my teenage years.

21. What was your last musical phase?
Hmm, serious obsession? i think i go in cycles. airy, light and beautiful things in the summer, Post punk followed by no wave in the autumn, nihlism in musical form in the winter, then funk and mash ups in the spring. but i've been bored for the last three months, and my excess of dark music last year has made me skip that phase entirely. currently im into really angular music, or 60s pop, and arabic and french music.

22. What's the crappiest CD/record/etc. you own?
there are many a bad cd dating back to high school which i could not sell. matthew good band, for one.

23. Do you prefer vinyl or CDs?
i only get to listen to Vinyl when at home, so until the summer, mp3 for the "on-the-go lifestyle".

24. All totalled, how much do you spend on music a month?
am poor, this is my problem. else a belle and sebastian ticket would be under my pillow. currently none.

uh oh. i started the year by buying an agenda and resolving to get my act together. i saw my bank statement on friday and that was the beginning of the feeling that perhaps i've slightly lost sight of that 'fresh year' enthusiasm.

well, this song is good, anyway.

ps: games night tomorrow at ryan and seamus and ' place!

i had a copy of Arabian Nights from 1909. Where did i put it? where?

i am going to watch a version of othello with frank finlay and laurance olivier. i dont like laurance olivier. he's a swingin dick who tries to steal the show. remember spartacus? what a shmuck.

frank finlay is great. and has just the right amount of closeted homoness to play Iago juuust right.

what do kids with macs use to download things? i'm two years behind in music. it's like getting into madchester when everyone's moved on to oasis.

i'm making it with the aid of mash ups. there is an amazing amount of MJ mash ups out there. i've been passing around that kelis and billy jean one for months, but the new thing it the daft punk and rock with you mash up. i danced in my underwear to it a moment ago. let it be noted that i'm still in my underwear.

i want to go dancing.

who else has moved to commercial drive? kat, alison, dory, ryan... who else has joined this exodus from cambie and other east end spots?

Today I woke up and sunlight was majestically beaming at me from my window. The sky was blue, and when i left for school it took a long time to get my eyes adjusted.

i took a day off from work, so i took my sweet time getting ready. I listened to music that reminded me of summer and good times. I cooked to beck's "summer girl" and i danced in my underwear to basement jaxx "red alert".

and now im in the SUB, settling in for an evening of mediocre essay writing, and perhaps at around 10:15 tonight I'll have an epiphany that will bring it all together.

Normally, this triple expresso and the fact that i have two essays to be done in the next week would make me jittery and scattered to no end. but i feel calm. Maybe it was the brief pause from seasonal depression. Mostly because the new super furry animals is so very very good. it's in my tops for the year. This will be my new 'illnois': I'll listen to it incessantly for weeeks, maybe months, till i have to stop and not listen for another year or so. This happens maybe 4 times a year, with breaks of the ol' shuffle button in between that will aquaint me with the mass amounts of music i download and never get to listen to. But in the meanwhile, this is just right.

i watched Bright Young Things last night. now that's what i call a party.

None of you know this, but Liv and I share a journal. well, mainly it was because we used to write letters to eachother all the time, but since im not so good at keeping papers intact, we tried the journal.

Liv has it right now, and she's had it for two weeks, and i think i used live journal the other day purely because i miss stream of consciouness writing, esoteric and unintelligable writing. it's my favourite kind. its so self-indulgent. and i like reading other people's non-sensical babblings, its brilliant. its so much more interesting to read, it tells you so much more about the person, when they write like they dont know/care about the audience.

interestingly enough, after my last post, Saelen replied, and i had no idea that Saelen had me on livejournal. and Saelen (who may be reading this now?) usually has it together, and i want him to think i have it together, so i there goes the stream of consciousness thing. back to show reviews and cheesy quizes.

I've been away. for a year. no, no, less than a year, but it's been a while, nonetheless [one word?]

so i should be working on neitzsche. am endlessly amused by the fact that he doesnt want to hide his personality. He says things like "that's disgusting!" when he was the one that wrote 'beyond good and evil'. and today i stumbled upon this jem: he's either talking about Spinoza, Kant, or philosophers in general defending Truth "in order thereby to strike terror at once into the heart of the assailant who should dare cast a glance on that invisable maiden, that Pallas Athene:-- how much of personal timidity and vulnerability does this masquerade of a sickly recluse betray!"

sickly recluse! snap!

that made me give out a chuckle comparable to a certain distinguished hearty laugh that come from the front row of my lit theory class from a boy that will remain unnamed...

Liv, why is it that i know you are the only one who will get my journal entries?

Friends, all you have missed in my months of recluse is that i've withdrawn to work and to school and to seamus and olivia. these things are essentially my world. That, and the b-line.

the new ladytron is hot.

the new broken social scene is cool.

broadcast were amazing.

i am only into listening to music by girls with very high or very low voices (broadcast, ladytron, deerhoof, blonde redhead versus nina simone, the organ, anna oxygen)

i saw a man today on the bus biting at the sides of his nails and in oversized jarvis cocker glasses and bed-hair, with obvious nerosis. it was hot.

three times and its law: nerdy, pasty, british men in ridiculous sweaters, with oversized glasses and oversized smiles, steal my heart with absurb ease

the opposite is true: pretentious, emaciated, arrogant-philosopher type, but so-beautiful-they-must-be-art men steal my heart with absurd ease

can you stare at someone for an hour and a half and they NOT notice?

Weir, why mock us so? so, so, bitter.

england is like neverland for my acquaintences. not neverland ranch. well, maybe like neverland ranch, but only for a certain girl i know who dated a certain british GQ model formerly in the libertines!

goodbye chris (not the same lady as above), who is moving out of seamus' place and off to england this friday

hello her replacement and impure thoughts

congrats to wilson for he-knows-what

and uh, hi to people i havent talked to in ages, like neil and pam

i like livejournal, this makes sense to no one but me. well, liv will get 2/3rds of it...

How do you keep the kids' dancing these days? am starting to feel the pressure for my setlist for the party. this friday, for those of you who have not heard, is Seamus' welcome back + birthday/ Johnny and mine deportation party. im DJing between 12-2 if you dont like the usual djing. should by booming and well-attended. Im leaving for the airport the next day at noon.

am going to Marble Arch this wensday to do research. anyone care to join me?

for those of you curious, am in the process of the following:

- moving
- packing for iran
- getting the paper work done for citr
- eating a well-made dinner in a kitchen full of people
- wondering where liv gets all the links she emails me
- looking at this personal's ad liv sent me, wondering if lonely hipsters have FINALLY cracked
- wondering if my life wouldnt be easier if i just became an old maid with liv and caroline. Think Golden Girls. Let me say here and now that i will be the Blanche and not the Dorthy of this group.
- wondering how i will meet seamus at the airport
- wondering what i will do in frankfurt for 10 hours
- wondering if this new CiTR look will be as successful as I hope

ok, three things.

a.) anyone going to the dears /soundtrack of our lives show?

b.) my term paper has taught me that yes, feminists need to fight for men as well.

c.) i am 15% away from being the most self-absorbed person in the world. I warned you all before, but, look, now its charted:

at last. a korg synth, as old as me, at my disposal. will bring it in to show and tell.

highlight of my day: carrying said synth from coquitlam to citr, on the bus with caroline, making it in time to do show.

am perfectly willing to show it off. come over to see it.

This is the funniest thing you've ever seen.

http://www.wwujd.com/

This is a site dedicated to the marvel that is Uncle Jesse. of Full House fame, of course.

highlights:

from "facts":
"Uncle Jesse parties with David Hasselhoff all day, every day!"; "In 1992, Uncle Jesse was MVP on the Japanese "Hungry, Hungry Hippos" National Championship Team. He was always the orange hippo."; "Uncle Jesse's abs glow in the dark."; "Contrary to popular belief, Uncle Jesse and Danny Tanner were NOT friends"

- the "Uncle Jesse vs. page", especially Uncle Jesse vs. Joey Lawrence

- the obsessive mentionings of Judge Dredd and motorcycles, the womanizing comments, the pictures in "myths and truths"

this is the best link ever.

go look at the pic of uncle jesse and david hasselhoff partying on the "uncle jesse doing stuff"
